Facebook is weakening democracy and harming children: Former activists |
Frances Hausen, a former Facebook activist, has accused US lawmakers of using social media to weaken and divide democracy and harm children.
The 36-year-old former product manager slammed Facebook at a Capitol Hill hearing.
Facebook, however, said it had no idea what Mrs. Hausen was talking about.
The allegation comes amid growing demands for control and verification of the social media giant.
Facebook is currently the world's most popular social networking site. According to the company, the number of active users per month is estimated at 2.7 billion. In addition, millions more use their other social media platforms, such as WhatsApp and Instagram.
However, from the beginning, Facebook has been criticized for failing to protect the privacy of its customers and for not taking adequate measures to prevent the spread of rumors and misinformation.
On Tuesday, both Republicans and Democrats in the U.S. Senate agreed to change Facebook. Which is a rare occurrence for both the political parties of the country.
