The US invites Taiwan to a democracy conference, angry China: The Biden administration has invited Taiwan to the US 'summit on democracy' to be held next month. The U.S. administration released a list of participants on Tuesday. Reuters quoted the list as saying.
A Reuters report, meanwhile, said the US move angered China.
The first such rally was a test for President Joe Biden. Because in his first foreign policy speech in February, Biden announced that the United States would face authoritarian forces led by China and Russia.
There are 110 participants on the State Department's invitation list for this virtual event on December 9 and 10. However, neither China nor Russia is on the list.
Taiwan's foreign ministry said the government would be represented at the conference by digital minister Adre Tang and Taiwan's de facto ambassador to Washington, Hsiao B-Khim.
The ministry further said that our country has been invited to participate in the summit of democracy. It is a testament to the years-long effort to uphold the values of democracy and human rights.
China's foreign ministry said it was "strongly opposed" to the invitation.
Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian told reporters in Beijing that US actions were "merely a cover for democracy." It is a tool to further their geopolitical objectives. Through which other countries can be oppressed, the world can be divided and their own interests can be served.
The announcement came as China pressured other countries to cut or sever ties with the island.
Taiwan says Beijing has no right to talk about it.
A virtual meeting between Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping took place earlier this month. Even at that meeting, there was a sharp disagreement between them over Taiwan.
