Elon Musk offered to help sell the Tesla shares if the United Nations could prove that 6 billion could alleviate world hunger.
According to CNN, Musk's comments came after David Basel, the director of the United Nations World Food Program (WFP), challenged the world's richest people, especially Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk. In an interview with CNN last week, David Basel called on them to take immediate action to end world hunger.
"6 billion could help 42 million people around the world who would literally die if we didn't reach them," David Basel told CNN's Connect the World at the time. This amounts to about 2 percent of Elon Musk's total assets.
In a tweet on Sunday, Tesla chief executive Elon Musk wrote, "If the WFP can explain that 7 billion can satisfy world hunger, I will sell Tesla shares now and I will."
"But it must be open source accounting so that people understand how the WFP spends money," added Elon Musk.
As of yesterday, according to Bloomberg's Billionaire Index, Elon Musk has a net worth of 311 billion. With this amount of wealth, he has surpassed Jeff Bezos and Bill Gates to become the richest man in the world.
