Myanmar is at risk of becoming a corona 'super-spreader' country |
Myanmar is at risk of becoming a corona 'super-spreader' country. Tom Andrews, the UN special envoy to the country, issued the warning.
In an interview published in the Guardian on Wednesday, Tom Andrews said that there is an acute infection of corona in the Southeast Asian country of Myanmar. The country has been in a deep political and economic crisis since the military coup last February. Acute coronary heart disease has further complicated the situation. Due to instability across Myanmar, the corona vaccination project has come to a standstill, the corona testing system has collapsed and government hospitals have become somewhat useless.
He said doctors at government hospitals had stopped working as part of a protest against the army government. However, due to the violent actions of the military government and the threat of arrest, they are being forced to secretly treat patients privately.
He said it was not clear how many people were infected with the corona in Myanmar and how many died.
He said, "It has become difficult to know the exact number due to the arrest of journalists and doctors. We know the infection is upward. It's growing fast, it's growing alarmingly fast. '
According to Myanmar's military-controlled Ministry of Health and Sports, 4,729 people have died in Corona since June 1. However, the actual number is thought to be much higher.
On Tuesday, the country's military government announced the construction of 10 new crematoriums in the largest city, Yangon.
Tom Andrews said, 'There are three types of lines in Yangon now. In front of an ATM booth, for oxygen — which is extremely dangerous. Because literally those who are standing in line for oxygen are being shot by the Myanmar military. The third line is for the funeral and in front of the morgue.
He added that there was an acute shortage of oxygen, medical equipment and medicines in various cities across Myanmar. People are hanging yellow and white flags in front of their houses. This means they need food or medicine. There are cries for help on social media.
The country's military has been accused of manipulating oxygen supplies. The army government has instructed not to sell oxygen to the people, claiming that people are stockpiling oxygen tanks.
Andrews said the international government, including Myanmar's neighbors, should take immediate action. Otherwise uncontrolled outbreaks can be seen at their borders as well.
He said, "Covid-19 is becoming a super spreader in Myanmar with a combination of horrible delta variants and other forms of the disease, which is very deadly, very contagious ... it is very dangerous for all reasons. It is true that Kovid transmits regardless of nationality, border, ideology or political party. It can push everyone to the brink of death. Myanmar is geographically located in a region where if the country becomes a super-spreader state, there could be more suffering throughout the region.
